La imagen de la tómbola empleada por los senadores para determinar qué funcionarios del Poder Judicial perderán su trabajo es, en efecto, muy poderosa. Y no sólo por sus asociaciones culturales con los sorteos de la Lotería Nacional y la canción de Augusto Algueró sino por la forma en que su uso rebaja los asuntos de la República y el devenir de los ciudadanos a juego de azar.
Iré más allá: ante el desdén por el conocimiento y la experiencia como valores profesionales, el desprecio al diálogo en tanto código político y el regodeo priápico en la omnipotencia de la aplanadora, la festiva y caótica tómbola sirve de emblema a una clase política constituida casi en exclusiva por operadores. La Reforma Judicial no sólo fue originada sino también pensada y pergeñada desde el Ejecutivo; no tocó al Legislativo discutirla, enmendarla o siquiera procesarla sino apenas reunir los votos –por cualquier medio necesario–, garantizar los tiempos, dar vuelta a la manivela. Es, en efecto, una tómbola la vida del operador político, ése que se la rifa por su líder, a cuyo número juega todo su cariño.
La idea se me impuso mientras releía un librito que mucho me impresionó en el 2008 de su publicación, y que buena falta haría reeditar, y acaso actualizar. En Del crepúsculo de los clérigos (Terracota), Armando González Torres reivindica la figura del intelectual público, artífice de “una intervención analítica y moral capaz de alertar la conciencia y resguardar la dignidad y los derechos inalienables del individuo”. El autor identifica en el siglo XX dos filones de éste fenómeno: el independiente –ajeno a la militancia– y el comprometido –variedad de la que cita ejemplos que van de Sartre a Orwell a Paz.
