Un medicamento utilizado para tratar el dolor neuropático ha encendido las alarmas al ser relacionado con más de 3 mil fallecimientos en los últimos cinco años, causando preocupación por el abuso de este fármaco debido a que puede desarrollar dependencia.
La pregabalina es una sustancia activa que actúa sobre el sistema nervioso central, modulando la liberación de neurotransmisores y, por ende, reduciendo diversos tipos de dolores neuropáticos, como la migraña, dolor de nervio ciático, dolor relacionado con la neuropatía diabética, de la fibromialgia, y del herpes zóster.
De acuerdo con información del Instituto Médico Cleveland Clinic, la pregabalina también se utiliza para tratar la epilepsia y ciertos trastornos de ansiedad. Sin embargo, posee un potencial efecto a generar dependencia, sobre todo si se toma de manera prolongada o en dosis altas.
