Los Juegos Olímpicos son posiblemente el evento deportivo más grande organizado a nivel mundial. Hoy, este evento se celebra en París y alberga a una potencia olímpica emergente. Décadas de desarrollo económico corresponden con el surgimiento de la República Popular China (RPC) como una fuerza global en los deportes internacionales.
Se han organizado en Asia las Olimpiadas de Tokio en 1964, Seúl en 1988, Beijing en 2008, Pyeongchang (Corea del Sur) en 2018, Tokio 2020, que en realidad se celebró en 2021 debido a la pandemia de Covid, y Beijing 2022.
En los primeros juegos modernos de 1896 (Atenas) participaron 14 naciones solo con atletas hombres. Quienes se llevaron medallas a casa fueron los participantes de países europeos, Estados Unidos y Australia. En 1912 (Estocolmo), Japón se convirtió en el primer país asiático en participar en los Juego Olímpicos, seguido por Filipinas en 1924 (París), y Birmania, China Singapur y Corea del Sur en 1948 (Londres).
